MUNICIPALITY OF ARGAO (CEBU)


GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION:  The Municipality of Argao is located in the Southeastern part of Cebu Province. It is bounded on the North by the Municipality of Sibonga; on the South by the Municipality of Dalaguete; on the West by the Municipalities of Dumanjug, Ronda, Alcantara, Moalboal and Badian; and on the east by Bohol Strait. It is approximately 66 kms. from Cebu City

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:

Altar de Sacrificio – The Altar de Sacrificio served as a cemetery during the Spanish occupation up until the 1800’s.  In 2007, the government decided to have it restored and now serves as a resting place for unborn children.

Unity Plaza – A very well maintained and well-restored plaza that it still 3 original cannons that date back to the late Spanish era and early American occupation.  It also features a well that served the Filipinos and the Spaniards alike during that significant era.

Saint Michael Archangel Church – After being made a parish in the early 1700’s, the Rococo-Baroque Church was constructed, which still stands up to this very day.  It has undergone numerous renovations overtime but it hasn’t lost its charming qualities.

Argao Hall of Justice – The Argao Hall of Justice is an interesting fixture in Argao’s history.  It served as a military barracks during the olden times.  It has now been rehabilitated to function as the municipality’s hall of justice.

Puerta Marina – The Puerta Marina was constructed in the 1700’s to protect the town from possible looters.  It serves as the main entrance from the sea to the charming town of Argao.

The Pipe Organ – The Spanish era spawned delicately designed pipe organs that were usually found in Churches.  There are 14 remaining pipe organs in the Philippines and 3 of them can be found in Cebu.
